When I teach about fairy tales I usually read a LOT of versions of Cinderella. We compare and contrast the books, write book reviews, and act out different versions. Sometimes we evem write our own version!
I LOVE teaching fractured fairytales. Last year we wrote our own fractured fairytale readers theatre. During centers - my center was the writing. As a class we voted on which fairy tale we wanted to base ours off of, then each group I met with wrote a scene - the scene they wrote they acted in - so everyone got a part! It was the funniest, most creative thing we did all year. They came up with some of the funniest things to put in their scripts! We ended up doing Alice in Wonderland and at one point - we started talking about "White Castle" instead of the the White Queen's Castle.. It was great! I can't wait to do it again :)
I'm going to post my fairy tale idea when I post my giveaway winner tonight! I'll share here first though! :) When I taught first graders at summer school, I paired the magic e rule with my fairy tale unit. I created a magic wand out of a star and a sentence strip to show how short vowels were magically changed once the e was added. It's kind of hard to explain, so check out my blog later tonight for a visual!

I have my students make a pocket book with pockets for each fairy tale that we study. All of the work and activities that we do for each tale is placed in their own pocket. It is an ongoing book that is made throughout the year. At the end of the year, we bind each book and they take it home with them. I grade each pocket as we finish them.

Kids are so familiar with fairy tales and love readers theater. One twist, the kids create an alternate ending. My students enjoy changing the classics and allowing the audience to choose which ending they would like to see performed.

We write our own fractured fairytales too!
We also make a puzzle from the story the 3 little pigs. I give them a blank sheet of paper that has a puzzle on it {just like a black line of a puzzle}. They draw a scene from the book and cut out the puzzle. Then, they do the puzzle with a friend! :)

Fairy Tales: we read all the stories of three (pigs, bears, kittens, and goats) and then write a twisted fairy tale. The first day they pick the three little good character animals, the big bad character animal, and what the good characters want to try to do. On the next day they write what the bad character does to try to stop the good characters. The third day the students write how they stop him and begin their illustrations for beginning, middle, and end. On the last day they all use their draft pieces to fill in a predictable book with all their information... and of course we share!

When I teach Fairy Tales, I love to compare and contrast them and also teach the kids about the number 3 and how it is "magical" in fairy tales. Then we go back and look and see how many of the fairy tales that we have read have something to do with the number 3.

When I teach a fairy tale unit, after identifying the elements of the genre, we watch Chitty Bang Bang. Then we have a debate about whether or not it would fall in to the Fairy Tale category, and why. We also do a castle study and look at real castles, and the Disneyland kind:-)

This is my first year teaching first grade so I have never taught a fait tale unit. I thought about talking about story elements and have students create a flip book. I am not teaching this until the second week in april so I am still thinking about how I want to teach this.

At the end of the year, as a sort of culminating event, each student chooses a fairy tale character that they love and then they "are" that character for the day. They really got into character, and last year one of my kids suggested that we write our own version of "Mrs. Smith's Storybook" based on our adventures that day.
